Well, I was going to write a post talking about the occurrences of Brown bodies struggling with mental illness being incarcerated or fatally shot by police instead of receiving adequate care. BUT I’m not going to do that. I was doing research and it’s infuriating, sad, and terrorizing. Those emotions aren’t something I ought to intentionally feed right now or ever. I don't have what it takes to do the work for zero benefit.
There’s also the disproportionate imprisonment...mmm, enslavement of Brown bodies and the resulting dehumanization that happens to the incarcerated. Then there’s the pretty inhumane practice of solitary confinement. Then all the ways these can cause mental health issues. Issues that then receive inadequate care, that set these people up for failure and recidivism. Trapped in a black hole, never to escape. Brown people that struggle with mental health issues
I’m not going to provide data. I’m not going to deliver anecdotes of specific people. I could. It'd take some time and labor. Some people have careers based on aggregating this information in the form of academic papers, documentaries, books, lecture circuits. But this isn't my career. I'm not getting payed to get the details of depressing information. So you'll have to trust a Brown man when he says it happens a LOT. Brown people that struggle with mental health difficulties are unable to receive adequate care and thus get mistreated by the system at jarring numbers. That's horrible. It shouldn't happen.
