I remember the first time I ever talked/learned about Brown people in history. More accurately, it's my earliest memory. There was a cartoonish depiction of the usual, inaccurate, "kid friendly" narrative of Thanksgiving. Pilgrims and Native Americans coming together and preparing for a feast. Prior to the moment, I don't recall ever talking about it. This was the first time I saw pictures of brown people in relationship to the past. Naturally, for quite some time, I thought "well, I must be native american then. these are the people I come from." I don’t remember exactly when I realized I was (also?) of African descent.
To this day, my family is significantly more interested in a game show or something on HGTV if it centers an African American family.
Representation Matters.
